Baltimore Maryland City Information

Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland and the metropolitan area is the 20th largest in the country. Baltimore City has a population 640,961 and is a major U.S. seaport, situated closer to many major Midwestern markets than any other Eastern seaport. Baltimore's economy has shifted from a heavy emphasis on manufacturing to a vibrant service oriented focus where the largest employer is The Johns Hopkins University and The Johns Hopkins Hospital. The Baltimore Metropolitan Area, which includes the city's surrounding suburbs, has approximately 2.6 million residents. Baltimore is also part of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area (CMSA) of approximately 8.1 million residents.

In recent years, Baltimore has undergone extensive efforts to redevelop the downtown area and the Inner Harbor. Up until the late 1970s, the harbor had been best known for abandoned warehouses full of rats and rotting piers. The city has brought back Baltimore’s harbor to its early days when the port was the landing destination for boats and ships bringing in exotic cargo from all over the world.
